Garbage & Recycle Pickup

The Village of McLean contracts with an outside waste management company (GFL Environmental) for solid waste collection and recycling.

Garbage

Please note that garbage pickup is on Monday mornings effective September 16, 2019.

Everyone within the village limits is required to have garbage collection. Fees for garbage collection are included on residents' monthly water/sewer/garbage bill, to be paid to EJ Water Cooperative.

For questions or to set up garbage collection service, please contact the Village Office by email (officemgr@mclean-il.org) or by phone (309-874-2102)/in person during regular business hours (Mon-Fri and first Sat of the month, 8 am to noon, 121 S. Hamilton St, McLean).

Guidelines:

  1. GFL Environmental provides once-per-week collection and disposal of residential waste from all single-family dwellings at the curb only on Monday mornings.* In order to ensure pickup, items must be out at the curb by 6:00 am.
  2. Each single family dwelling is limited to the pickup of not more than one (1) 95-gallon tote cart or six (6) cans, bags, boxes, or bundles or any combination of them as long as it does not exceed six (6) items.
  3. It is the duty and responsibility of every owner and occupant of property to keep and store refuse, trash, junk, and other unwanted or discarded material in a receptacle meeting the following requirements (see Ordinances §94.09, §136.01 - §136.07):
  • Conceals the material from public view
  • Prevents the material from harboring insects, rodents, or other vermin
  • Prevents odors
  • Prevents spreading or scattering of such material by wind, rain, or other natural cause
  • Prevents the degradation of the health, safety, or aesthetic standards of the community

*Per GFL Environmental policy, pickup days falling on or during the week after the following legal holidays will be delayed until the following day (Tuesday): New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Bulk Pickup

Bulk waste is anything that is not normal, everyday household trash. GFL Environmental will not pick up bulk waste on their weekly run unless they are contacted at 217-735-5881 by 1 pm Friday for Monday am pickup. Prepayment is required for all bulk items over the phone or in person at their office, located at 835 1575th St, Lincoln, IL.

Guidelines:

  • Carpet needs to be cut into lengths of NO MORE than 5 feet.
  • Construction debris must be bundled, be less than 5 feet in length, and weigh less than 50 lbs. per bundle.
  • Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic.

NOTE: If a LOT is being put out (like a house clean out or more than minimal construction materials) then a dumpster needs to be rented from the company of your choice.

Items that cannot & will not be taken:

  • Tires
  • Paint
  • Batteries
  • Appliances (white goods)
  • Yard Waste
  • Hazardous Material (oil, gas, solvents)
  • E-Waste (computers, TV’s, electronics)
  • Concrete

Recycle

Recycling collection is available for an additional charge on your monthly water/sewer/garbage bill, to be paid to EJ Water Cooperative.

After you sign up for service, a bin will be delivered to your home by GFL Environmental during one of their regular local routes.

Recyclables must meet the guidelines outlined below and on the lid of the provided bin. 

*Per GFL Environmental policy, pickup days falling on or during the week after the following legal holidays will be delayed until the following day (Friday): New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. 

Items eligible for curbside pickup:

  • #1 through #7 (except #6 - Styrofoam)
  • Plastics, excluding those that have contained hazardous or flammable chemicals
  • Cardboard broken down no larger than 2 ft. x 2 ft., bundled or contained
  • Newspapers, catalogs, phone books, magazines and junk mail
  • Steel, aluminum and bi-metal cans
  • Clear glass bottles and jars
  • Cereal and gift boxes

Items collected at curbside are picked up in a single-stream process; it is no longer necessary to separate your recyclables for collection. All containers must be rinsed out before pickup. This will reduce contamination and odors.
